What to expect

All procedures such as skin excisions are done under local anaesthetic and apart from the injection of the local anaesthetic are generally comfortable and painless procedures. The worst part of the procedure is the initial few seconds when the local is injected, the rest of the procedure is then pain free. In most cases the procedure is less troublesome than a trip to the dentist.

All injectable agents such as the local anaesthetic and sutures are single use items. Procedures are done using high quality surgical instruments that are sterilised to meet all appropriate standards regarding sterilization procedures. Fitzpatrick House has internal audit and tracking procedures meeting all appropriate standards. Linen is obtained through the hospital linen service and in most instances single use products are also used.

Most surgical procedures do not cause any significant bleeding. For bleeding control in more complex surgical procedures a hospital grade electrocautery unit is used that does not cause discomfort and allows precise control. All procedures are well tolerated by patients without significant pain or discomfort. Even younger children and adolescents tend to tolerate procedures without too much fuss but this depends of course on the individual procedure and the temperament of the patient. The appropriateness of planned procedures and complexity is always discussed at length at the first consultation.
